 Berkeley SurveyUC Berkeley and Rerip Team Up to Make Surfing Sustainable
As the latest step in an ongoing collaboration, the San Diego-based organization Rerip has teamed with Tobias Schultz, from the Mechanical Engineering department at UC Berkeley, to help expand its surfboard recycling program. Schultz, known for his "Surfboard Cradle-to-Grave" study, is a graduate student at UC Berkeley.
Last spring, Schultz and Meghan Dambacher from Rerip mentored the ReStoked project, a team of undergraduate engineers who designed a system to collect old surfboards and re-use them for socially beneficial causes; the ReStoked system will be incorporated into Rerip later this year. The project was part of Mechanical Engineering 110, a class taught by Dr. Alice Agogino.
“The next step in improving surfboard recycling is to learn about the beginning and end of a surfboard’s life, from a surfer’s perspective,” says Schultz. “It has been studied from a technical view, but a not from a human one. Why do surfers throw surfboards away? Why do or don’t they buy ‘green’ surfboards? We’ll use that to improve surfboard recycling, and the design of ‘green’ surfboards in general.”
