Surfboard Recycling with Rerip.com

Check out the new Rerip.com Recycling Blog.

The information displayed here is often the most current and the blog allows for your feedback and commentary.  Please take a look at it and leave any thoughts or ideas.

Thanks always for the support!

WHAT WE DO:

Rerip.com collects any surfboard in any condition.  Boards are then put into three different piles.  One pile is for boards that are still surfable, either in their collected state or with some work by a ding repair craftsman.  The second pile is for boards that are beyond repair for surfing, but are used for a variety of art projects.  The last pile is for the boards that are hardest to reuse, and they are saved for Research and Development in use as a filler for concrete.

REUSE FOR SURFING

Many boards are given to the program that are in great shape.  Rerip works with local ding repair craftsman to make sure the boards are watertight.  Many of the boards are given away to Non-Profit Organizations or people in need.  Some of these boards are resold for nominal prices.  The monies are used to sustain the program.

Rerip loves it when boards make it back into the hands of surfing's youth.  Pictured here is Christian who loves to surf in San Diego and wanted to transition from a softboard to a real shortboard.  He used his allowance to buy his very first shortboard!

REUSE FOR ART

We work with a variety of local artists and organizations who use boards for art projects, displays or signage.  Everything from fins and broken bits to complete boards have been salvaged and reused.  There have already been many mixed media works and fine art paintings created out of or on something that would have otherwise been buried in the dump.  The transition of this board here is one example.

Boards for art are available for a small fee ($5-$30) or free to schools and non-profits. All funds generated support the continuation of the recycling program.  Email us and tell us what you need! recycle@rerip.com

RECYCLING INTO CONCRETE?

This experimental project has been underway for over a year now.  Time and money has been spent testing the viability for surfboards as a filler in concrete.  Tables, bricks and a patio have been made using "Surfcrete".

Ecocentric Rennovations

Rerip.com has partnered with Ecocentric Renovations and KV Company, a construction company and design firm who receive all the most damaged, broken and unrideable boards. Ecocentric Renovations recycles the surfboards and pieces to use them as a filler in concrete for lightweight, non-structural applications. This means your next tabletop, siedwalk or skatepark could contain one of your old used surfboards.

We will reuse those trashed boards!

F.A.Q.

I am an artist and want to buy an old board.  How much do you charge?

Right now we are charging artists who will be using the boards for for-profit projects.  We keep the prices very low (starting at $5) and that money goes to building bins and keeping up with the costs to sustain the program.

I am a shaper and I have a lot of leftover foam.  Do you want it?

We do, eventually.  We have a few projects pending that will most likely require extra foam.  Because this program is new, we are figuring out logistics.

I am a construction company and would like to learn about the process, who should I talk to?

Please contact EcoCentric Construction for details: (213)316.0150  X  151 or email sv@ecobuiltinc.com.

Is Rerip a non-profit?

Rerip.com is a for-profit business model.  The program we created here runs like a non-profit, and will eventually be set up as a non-profit.  We are in the process of considering official status.
